PROJECTS :

Anadaman and Nicobar Islands are a group of 572 Islands located in the East Cost of India. The reserved protected forests extend over 85 per cent of the territory. Andaman Islands are also birds paradise.

In Andaman land with 929 square kilometers are with different species of Mangroves. Mangroves are the treasures of the Island. There are 41 species of mangroves which have to be conserved as part of fauna of Andaman paradise.

COPDANET began its mangrove conservation network in 2003. COPDANET helped the poor fishefolk and tribal people living near the forests to learn mangrove science and later on taught them environmental awareness and engaged them in the restoration of degraded mangroves. Several men and women are now earning enough money over raising mangroves seedlings and selling them to botanical garden and forest department. They also earn their income by through transplantation for forest reserve.

COPDANET has built a beautiful Mangrove Resource Training Centre and Biological Garden in South Andaman with the grant of Seacology and serve various local communities in teaching about the importance of mangroves for replenishing fishery resources and to be ready to face any natural calamities. COPDANET hopes that this project will become sustainable within the next five years. Till then external funding is necessary to build a people organization and teach others about environmental sanity and more equity in economic development with mangrove conservation as a basic livelihood option for the weaker sections in the Islands.
